Germany to Boycott Paralympics Opening Ceremony in Protest of Russian, Belarusian Participation
Verona, Italy – In a significant show of solidarity with Ukraine, the German Paralympic team will not participate in the parade of nations at the opening ceremony of the 2026 Paralympic Winter Games in Verona. The decision, announced by the German Disabled Sports Association (DBS) just three days before the Games begin, comes in response to the International Paralympic Committee’s (IPC) decision to allow athletes from Russia and Belarus to compete under their own flags.
“This decision serves both the concentration on the upcoming competitions and the desire to respectfully express our solidarity with the Ukrainian delegation,” the DBS stated in a press release. While the team will abstain from the traditional march of athletes, they will still participate in pre-recorded segments that will be shown during the ceremony.
The move follows a separate, earlier dispute involving the Ukrainian team, who were initially barred from competing in their planned team outfits. The issue stemmed from the clothing featuring a map of Ukraine, including Crimea – territory currently occupied by Russia – which was deemed “too political” by organizers. Details of that dispute emerged shortly before the German boycott announcement.
Ukraine and Estonia to Skip Opening Ceremony Entirely
Germany is not alone in its protest. Both Ukraine and Estonia have announced they will completely boycott the opening ceremony. The IPC’s September decision to lift sanctions against the Russian and Belarusian Paralympic committees sparked widespread criticism, leading to these demonstrations of dissent. The decision allowed athletes from both nations to compete under their national flags, a reversal of the restrictions in place during the Olympic Winter Games in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, where Russian athletes were only permitted to compete as individual neutral athletes.
The DBS had previously criticized the IPC’s decision to allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in the event in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo. “Especially in challenging times, it remains our common task to visibly live the Paralympic values and resolutely protect the integrity of sport,” the association said.
The German government has also voiced its disapproval. Sport Minister Christiane Schenderlein will not attend the opening ceremony, stating that the decision to allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete under their own flags deviates from the line taken by the International Olympic Committee, a position the German government supports. However, Schenderlein will still attend the Paralympic competitions themselves, expressing her appreciation for the athletes and their dedication. “They stand for ambition, fairness and cohesion – and they represent our country with great commitment and attitude,” she said.
This decision by the German team represents a significant shift in stance. Just last week, the DBS indicated it did not plan a boycott, stating its focus would remain on the sporting competitions. DBS President Hans Jörg-Michels had previously said the organization would “focus on the sporting competitions.”
The Paralympics are scheduled to take place in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo from March 6th to March 15th. The Games represent a pinnacle of athletic achievement for athletes with disabilities, and the controversy surrounding the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes has cast a shadow over the event. The situation highlights the ongoing tensions between sporting principles and geopolitical realities.
The decision by Germany, Ukraine, and Estonia underscores the deep divisions within the Paralympic movement regarding the participation of athletes from Russia and Belarus amidst the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. It remains to be seen how this situation will unfold during the Games and what impact it will have on the overall atmosphere of competition and sportsmanship.
