KV Mechelen seems to have made a nice move in January. It did see a strong player leave with Lion Lauberbach, but acted quickly and brought in a promising replacement in the person of Bouke Boersma.
The 20-year-old target striker was signed from De Graafschap, where he scored easily in the Dutch second division in the first half of the season. However, that meant that many other clubs showed interest.

KV Mechelen defeated two clubs
For example, KV Mechelen managed to trump Go Ahead Eagles and Avellino for Boersma’s signature. The first club is the Dutch cup holder who played the Europa League this season.
In The Latest News Boersma explains why he did not move to Deventer. “Why not? Rather ask ‘why Mechelen?’. (laughs) GAE is a good club, but many players who won the cup had left,” it said.
Profile fits in Belgium
He also did not like Avellino. “In my head that was never an option – I didn’t want to go to Serie B. Italy was not a good idea. I wanted to go to Belgium,” said Boersma. “I wanted to taste a different kind of football here. More physical, fiercer. In contrast to the ‘Dutch school’ in which I was trained. I am going to learn an even broader skill set here. My profile fits in Belgium.”
In his first matches at Mechelen, Boersma made a good impression, in an offensive triangle with Myron van Brederode and Kiki Vanrafelghem. He has not yet managed to score, but he has already provided an assist.
