Uli Hoeneß can imagine Thomas Müller as the future boss of FC Bayern. The FCB patron already has a training plan in mind for this.
Munich – The future of FC Bayern will not only be decided on the pitch, but increasingly also in the executive suites. After the end of the Hoeneß-Rummenigge era in operational business, the record champions made some changes in management levels. Honorary President Uli Hoeneß has a long-term dream of giving Thomas Müller a significant role.
In an interview with the Bild Hoeneß has now revealed concrete plans for Thomas Müller in a future leadership role for the first time. “I’ve already offered Thomas that we can properly train him,” said the 74-year-old. His idea: After the end of his career, Müller should “intern at large corporations and top clubs in Europe and the USA” in order to prepare for a CEO position at Bayern. Müller could “basically imagine” this – “but not yet,” explained Hoeneß.

The background is clear: Hoeneß wants someone at the top of the club who “has played at a high level like Karl-Heinz.” Whether today’s professionals who have earned 50 or 60 million euros in their careers still have the motivation for such a grueling management role is, however, “the big question,” the honorary president admitted.
Müller himself had recently sent signals that fit Hoeneß’ plans. “The connection to FC Bayern is still there, emotionally and in terms of content,” explained the 36-year-old at the beginning of February. At the same time, he emphasized that he wanted to continue to be a player for the time being: “After my playing career, I would like to consciously pursue the training path – instead of hectically trying to get a certificate on the side.” Müller’s contract with the Vancouver Whitecaps in the MLS runs until the end of 2026.
Also Manuel Neuer was approached as a possible candidate for management. Hoeneß reacted cautiously: “I don’t have the feeling that Manuel is interested in it yet.” If that changes, they would “certainly look into it”. The Munich team is currently missing Neuer again with an injury, and an imminent end to his career seems increasingly likely.
Hoeneß formulated an unmistakable signal for Müller: “If Thomas signals to us that he is interested, we will of course talk to him.” It is an open invitation to the Bayern icon – and a clear indication that a club legend should be in charge at Säbener Straße again in the long term.
