Another step closer to the title, made possible thanks to Leandro Trossard. The Red Devil opened the smooth afternoon walk against revelation Sunderland with an assist. Then the leader also showed his superiority on the scoreboard. However, it was not an afternoon of celebration for our compatriot. Shortly before the final whistle, Trossard had to leave the field (slightly?) injured.
No less than 9 points.
Of the 5 major European competitions, it currently has the largest lead over the first pursuers. Aston Villa lost expensive points on the Bournemouith field (1-1), Manchester City has played one match less for the time being.
Yet Arsenal did not face a simple task today. Promotional candidate Sunderland is having a strong season and came to the Emirates Stadium in 8th place. Moreover, it kept the Gunners at 2-2 in November.
The match picture was nicely balanced in the first half. Both the home team and the visitors created chances in a match that went back and forth pleasantly.
Just before half-time, the league leader struck clinically. It was Red Devil Leandro Trossard who served Zubimendi, and the Spaniard wonderfully drove the ball past goalkeeper Roefs via the post. A brilliant goal from the competition leader, who went to rest with a narrow lead.
Sunderland makes Gunners sweat, Gyökeres saves
After coffee, PhD student Sunderland made it quite difficult for Arsenal.
With old acquaintances Sadiki and Talbi, the London defense came under pressure several times, but goalkeeper Raya was not embarrassed.
On the hour mark, Arteta wanted to introduce attacking blood with Martinelli and Gyökeres, and that turned out to be the right move. Just a few minutes after his entrance, Gyökeres scored the reassuring 2-0.
The spring of an unruly Sunderland seemed to have been broken. Angulo, who was still with Anderlecht until last week, was allowed to make his first minutes for his new team, but he was also unable to force a tying goal for the visitors.
For Trossard the afternoon had a dark edge. He had to be substituted in minute 89 due to discomfort. After an innocent movement he seemed to suffer from hamstring pain.
In the end, Gyökeres increased his goal total even further after a counter by the home team. Sunderland is ultimately sent home with a hard 3-0.
