The American Olympic Committee (USOPC) on Thursday reaffirmed its confidence in the president of the organizing committee for the 2028 Los Angeles Games Casey Wasserman, who apologized after his name appeared among the latest documents linked to the Epstein affair.
“Casey made a statement that reflects his views, we have nothing to add to that. His statement speaks for itself,” USOPC President Gene Sykes said at a press conference in Milan on the eve of the opening of the 2026 Winter Olympics.
“I live in Los Angeles myself and understand local politics well. I would say that today I am more confident in LA28’s operational capabilities, its leadership, the quality of its work and its effectiveness than I have ever been since I started working with LA28 when it was established in 2015,” he added.
Calls for Wasserman to resign
The US government released millions of documents in late January as part of the Epstein affair, including salacious email exchanges in 2003 between Casey Wasserman and Ghislaine Maxwell, who is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence for helping sex criminal Jeffrey Epstein recruit underage prostitutes.
Targeted by calls for resignation from Los Angeles city officials, Wasserman apologized Saturday.
“I deeply regret my correspondence with Ghislaine Maxwell, which took place more than 20 years ago, long before her horrific crimes came to light,” he said, claiming to have “never had a personal or professional relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.”
Wasserman, 51, has not been accused of wrongdoing and is not facing any charges related to the Epstein scandal.
