Eva Lys has to give back part of her prize money from this year’s Australian Open. The 24-year-old, who is currently injured in her knee, is said to have competed in doubles even though she already knew that she was not fit.

Lys was fined 10,000 Australian dollars (almost 8,500 euros) by the Australian Open. The accusation against the German: She is said to have competed in doubles, although she was actually already injured at the time.
Alongside the Dutch Suzan Lamens, Lys gave up against Marie Bouskova and Andreja Klepac after a clear 0-5 deficit. According to the Australian organizers, the 24-year-old was already aware that she was injured at this point. However, Lys is said to have competed anyway in order to collect the entry prize money of the equivalent of around 13,000 euros.
Previously defeated in singles
The Grand Slam rules stipulate that the professionals at a Grand Slam tournament “show performances at a professional level”. If, in the opinion of the umpire, this is not the case, a fine up to the amount of the first round prize money may be awarded.
Before her short appearance in doubles, Lys had been defeated in the singles in round one by the Romanian Sorana Cirstea 6:3, 4:6 and 3:6.
