Coach Christian Ilzer and TSG Hoffenheim continued their climb in the German Bundesliga on Tuesday thanks to a goal from Austria’s team player Alexander Prass. With a 2-0 win at Werder Bremen, their fourth win en suite, they successfully defended third place despite being outnumbered for almost 40 minutes. Fourth-placed RB Leipzig lost some ground with a 1-1 draw at relegation candidate St. Pauli and is now two points behind Hoffenheim.
In the supplementary game of the 16th round, Prass put his club on the road to victory with his first goal ever for Kraichgauer (44th). Shortly after red for Wouter Burger (52nd), Grischa Prömel (54th) ensured the final score. The supposed goal by Prass’ ÖFB teammate Romano Schmid (63′) was canceled by VAR due to an offside position.
Bremen, where Marco Friedl was suspended and Marco Grüll was substituted after an hour, are still only three points clear of the relegation zone.
Schlager hits the bar
Leipzig started promisingly at St. Pauli with a shot from the pole by Alexander Schlager (8th) and also took the lead through Yan Diomande (66th). But then Ole Werner’s team could no longer improve. In stoppage time, the home team managed to get a well-deserved equalizer thanks to a penalty kick from Martijn Kaars.
There is currently one point missing from the relegation place, while 15th-placed Bremen have four points. For Leipzig, Schlager and Nicolas Seiwald played through, Christoph Baumgartner was involved until the 85th minute.
