Iva Jovic (USA, 27th) reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open. This is my first Grand Slam quarterfinal. She showed off her strength by completely defeating Yulina Putintseva (Kazakhstan, 94th place), who was the same age as her, in 53 minutes. This tournament has been a streak of zero loss sets, and the content of the game is flawless. The next opponent is finalist Arina Sabalenka (Belarus, 1st place).
Jovic defeated Putintseva 6-0 6-1 in the fourth round (round of 16) of the Australian Open held on the 25th.
Jovic’s style, which favors shaking opponents left and right with large angled strokes, was effective in the fourth round as well. Putintseva, also a defensive player, seemed to be Jovic’s favorite style to play against. Jovic, who had the upper hand in attack power, was able to easily peel off Putintseva’s defense, ultimately ending the game with a bakery score in 53 minutes. The total points of the game were 51 to 23, and Putintseva suffered the humiliation of only scoring 23 points in 13 games.
Jovic’s ranking at the time of last year’s Australian Open was 191st. And this year it ranks 27th. They showed rapid progress over the past year, significantly raising their rankings, and even received a seed for this competition.
And her upward trend is being proven by her skills. Not only is it a straight game for four games in a row, but the content of the game is very good. It was the same when she defeated Jasmine Paolini (Italy, 8th place) in the third round, and she showed a near-perfect performance in this match against Putintseva.
Jovic rose to 20th place in the live ranking. Although we have to watch the results of other players, the possibility of finishing in the top 20 after this tournament is very high.
The next opponent is finalist Arina Sabalenka. Sabalenka defeated Victoria Mboko (Canada, No. 16) 6-1 7-6(1).
Jovic faces Sabalenka for the first time. However, Sabalenka is not the style that Jovic prefers. Jovic has shown a weak side to players who are more specialized in power. Jovic faced the highest wall in the quarterfinals.
Sabalenka will face the first and second candidates for the Rookie of the Year award from last year. Even Mboko and Jovic are doubles partners in this tournament. Sabalenka is currently facing an interesting matchup against North America’s top 10 partner players.
