After 26 minutes of play, trailing 1-0, Veerman went to the ground screaming. Newcastle captain Guimarães had shot the ball away a few seconds earlier, but then planted his studs full on the Volendammer’s ankle. Siebert ‘only’ punished the Brazilian’s action with yellow, while many believed red would have been appropriate.

After the match, Veerman appears in front of the Ziggo Sport cameras and is immediately asked by reporter Noa Vahle how his foot is doing. “Stiff, it hurts, so it will last for a while,” the midfielder responds. “What did the referee say to you?” Vahle then wants to know. “Really scandalous,” said Veerman. “He hit the ball firsthe said. So that’s why it wasn’t a red card. But if this isn’t red, that’s it.”
‘If things don’t go well, you’ll break your leg’
“Why it is red?” Veerman continues. “He puts his foot fully over the ball and comes full force with his studs under my shin guards above my ankle. If things go wrong, you will break your leg. I think I was lucky.”
