Wolff triumphs in the women’s mass start
On Sunday, January 19, the stage of the Junior Cup of the International Biathlon Union (IBU) ended in Madona, where Latvian athlete Esther Wolfa won the women’s 9 km mass start in the last competition. She went the distance with one mistake in the shooting range and finished in 29:40.9. This gave her her second gold medal overall at this stage and her third award of the competition weekend.
Esther Wolff also showed a great performance in the previous days, collecting a total of two gold and one silver medal. Her success in this mass start was achieved with a flawless performance in the final standing shoot, which allowed her to overtake her closest competitors. Slovenia’s Manca Kaserman came in second, more than a minute behind, while Poland’s Amelia Liszka was third.
Lozber had an unlucky day in the boys’ competition
In the men’s 12 km mass start, Latvian biathlete Rihards Lozbers, who started from number 7, did not have a successful day. Despite a good start, a number of shooting errors, including three standing in the final shootout, prevented them from fighting for the top spots. He finished in 6th position, losing over a minute and a half to the winner Vladimir Kochmanek of the Czech Republic. Kočmanek won with a flawless performance in all shooting ranges. The second fastest was the Austrian Thomas Marhl, and the third was the Estonian Frederik Välbe.
Alziņa – the only one with no errors
Laura Alziņa, who in the women’s competition showed an excellent performance in the shooting range, made all 20 shots without mistakes. Although it did not guarantee a medal, a near-perfect performance in prone and standing shooting is a very valuable result that confirms the athlete’s progress.
Madonna as the center of biathlon
This stage of the IBU Junior Cup in Madona was an important event in both the Latvian and international biathlon calendar. Madona’s sports and recreation base “Smeceres sils” has proven its ability to host top-level competitions, and this event once again confirmed the city’s role as an important biathlon center in Latvia. Around 250 athletes from 25 countries took part in the competition, confirming the international importance of the event.
The harbingers of Wolff’s success
Esther Wolff has shown steady progress this year. Her successful performance in Madonna is the logical result of years of preparation and determination. Before that, she has also competed in the World and European Youth Championships, as well as gained experience in the IBU Cup for adults, which proves her serious approach to her sports career.
