The Cuban right pitcher Yariel Rodriguez will join Team Cuba for the World Classic 2026after receiving the approval of the Toronto Blue Jays, according to information from journalist Francys Romero on his social networks.
Rodríguez is scheduled to perform March 1 in Arizonawhere the Cuban national team will carry out part of its preparation before the tournament. According to the information, the pitcher will act exclusively from the bullpen, with a limit of two innings per outing, in coordination with the organization of MLB.
The presence of Yariel represents an important reinforcement for Cuba’s pitching corps, particularly in a context marked by absences of Major League players heading to the Classic. His role as a short reliever will allow the team to have a high-level arm without compromising its workload heading into the regular season.
It should be remembered that, a few years ago, the pitcher — born in Camagüey — severed his relations with the Cuban Sports Federation after not showing up for the contract that had been offered to him in Japan. In response, the official entity even demanded compensation of $10 million, in one of the most tense episodes between the regime and a top athlete.
Today, however, the story seems to have taken a 180-degree turn. The possible reinstatement of lanzallamas not only marks a radical change in its relationship with the sports authorities, but could also set a precedent and open a new course of action for the Cuban government in the face of players who decide to break with the official system and seek their professional development outside the island.
The 2026 World Baseball Classic will take place in March, with Cuba placed in Group A in San Juan, Puerto Rico, where it will look to replicate—or improve upon—its performance from the previous edition, in which it reached the semifinals.
