The European Handball Championship is underway – and Sweden is seeking revenge after the failure in the WC a year ago.

Handball EC 2026 is decided in Sweden, Denmark and Norway and runs from 15 January to 1 February. Michael Apelgren’s blue-yellow national team is on the hunt for revenge after the 14th place in the WC 2025, which was a historic low.

The matches are played in Malmö (Malmö Arena), Kristianstad (Kristianstad Arena), Herning (Jyske Bank Boxen), Bærum (Unity Arena).

24 teams are in the EC, which begins with group games where the two best teams from each group advance to the so-called main round. Two groups are then formed for the main round, where the first and second in each group advance to the semi-finals.

Group A (Herning): Germany, Spain, Austria, Serbia

Group B (Herning): Denmark, Portugal, North Macedonia, Romania

Group C (Oslo): France, Norway, Czech Republic, Ukraine

Group D (Oslo): Slovenia, Faroe Islands, Montenegro, Switzerland

Group E (Malmö): Sweden, Croatia, Netherlands, Georgia

Group F (Kristianstad): Ungern, Iceland, Poland, Italy

￭ The two best teams from groups A, B and C advance to the main round in Herning, while the two best teams from groups D, E and F advance to the main round in Malmö.

￭ The two best teams from each group in the main round advance to the semi-finals in Herning, the group threes play for fifth place.

￭ The main round is played 22-28 January, the semi-finals on 30 January and the final and bronze match on 1 February.
