Slightly irritated and with some surprise, Marco van Basten watched PSV – Excelsior last Saturday evening. Van Basten cannot comment on ‘Pepi’s moment’.
Van Basten seems to be irritated every week by all the good things that seem to be happening at PSV, but that’s besides the point. This time it is Ricardo Pepi who arouses Van Basten’s amazement because how can you fall like that, is what Van Basten actually meant to say.
Pepi has now undergone surgery and has been sidelined for almost two months. Yet PSV is being advised left and right not to sign a new player. Both Ziggo analyst Wim Kieft and Ziggo analyst Marco van Basten see no need to bring in a replacement for Pepi. “They are already champions,” Van Basten shouted in the Rondo broadcast.
Van Basten can’t figure out how Ricardo Pepi managed to break his forearm. “How is it possible that he falls like that? I think it’s strange. He has to fall normally, right? He doesn’t get a push,” said Van Basten, who simply calls everything he doesn’t like ‘weird’.
“It’s strange. It’s freaky, actually,” Ruud Gullit responded. Pepi’s retirement may prompt PSV to sign a new striker. But is that necessary, the analysts at Rondo were asked: “Til can play quite well there and Saibari will be back soon. There are many trainers who play without a striker. It is possible,” Kieft responded.
“They do have a reasonable selection,” Van Basten tried to downsize the qualities of Peter Bosz’s selection. “They can be second in the Dutch competition,” said the slightly cynical Van Basten.
