Flick Explains Cancelo’s Barcelona Transfer

Barcelona entered the January transfer window with the aim of strengthening their defense after Andreas Christensen suffered an ACL injury. Flick has confirmed that although they initially planned to find a suitable replacement for Christensen, he and sporting director Deco decided that the opportunity to bring back Cancelo was too good to pass up.

At a press conference earlier this week, Flick said: “I spoke with my staff, and with Deco we discussed a lot. And we thought when Ronald [Araujo] Again, we have a good alternative in the center back position. Joao can play on both sides, he can give us a good option. But in the end, as of now, it’s not finished, but I would love it if it happened. He is another option for the attacking line. We talked about signing a centre-back, but I think that makes more sense, I think it’s a good option, and a high-quality player.”

“We’ve had a situation over the last two years where we have to be smart in signing players. It’s not like other clubs, which can spend hundreds of millions on players. But I think it’s good, you can see our players developing. Our young players are developing, and we believe in them. Now we have the opportunity to bring in a veteran player. I would appreciate it if he came.”
