Antwerp: Champion Maker’s Exit – Winter Transfer News

Antwerp must put a winter dream away for good. There will be no return for Gaston Ávila, because the defender is about to make a different choice. That is a major setback for The Great Old.

Antwerp no longer has to think about a return of Gaston Avila. According to The Telegraph Ajax will rent him to Argentina’s Rosario Central. It is rented for one year, until January 2027.

The Argentinians also negotiated a purchase option amounting to 6.5 million euros. The contracts still have to be signed, but nothing seems to stand in the way of the transfer.

Avila chooses to return to South America

It is a downer for Antwerp. The Great Old thought of Avila as a winter reinforcement, but he preferred a return to his homeland. Antwerp fans still have good memories of the defender.

He was there when the club won the double. Antwerp bought him from Boca Juniors for 4.4 million euros in 2022, only to let him leave for Ajax a year later for 12.5 million euros.

There he suffered a serious cruciate ligament injury at the beginning of 2024, while they also did not seem to be completely satisfied with his performance. Last year he was loaned to Fortaleza in Brazil.
