Diallo died suddenly – Olympic champion mourns her horse
Diallo was considered a hope for the Dressage World Championships in Aachen. Now the horse has succumbed to an illness. Rider Jessica von Bredow-Werndl says goodbye with emotional words.
The four-time Olympic dressage champion Jessica von Bredow-Werndl mourns the loss of her horse Diallo. According to the German Equestrian Association, the rider’s hope for the future was taken to the horse clinic in Munich on Monday and died there on Tuesday. The eleven-year-old gelding, along with von Bredow-Werndl, was considered a candidate for the World Championships in Aachen in August.
“We danced together at the weekend, it all felt so easy,” the rider wrote on Instagram. “And then this illness came like a storm, silent, merciless and unstoppable, eating through your body in hours and tearing my heart from my chest.” The Borna virus is considered a possible cause of death, as von Bredow-Werndl explained: “The investigations are still ongoing.”

Weiter schreibt die 39-Jährige: "Du hast gekämpft. Wir haben gemeinsam gekämpft. Wir mussten dich gehen lassen mit gebrochenem Herzen, weil deins nicht mehr konnte."
Diallo galt als sportlicher Nachfolger der Stute Dalera, mit der von Bredow-Werndl unter anderem vier olympische Goldmedaillen gewonnen hat. Zuletzt hatte das Paar im November beim Weltcup-Turnier in Stuttgart den Grand Prix und die Kür gewonnen.
"Ich bin sehr traurig, dass wir ein Pferd mit sehr guter internationaler Perspektive und liebenswertem Charakter verloren haben", sagte Bundestrainerin Monica Theodorescu.
