FIFA will crown the world footballer of the year at the “New World Football Awards”. The world football association announced on Monday evening that it had entered into a partnership with the Dubai Sports Council (DSC). “From 2026, the event will be the only official, annual FIFA awards ceremony,” FIFA said.
The new format replaces “The Best FIFA Football Awards”, which the world association had held since 2016. However, the Ballon d’Or, awarded by the French trade newspaper France Football, is more important to the players.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino and Co. want to change that. The new format will be “not just an awards ceremony, but rather an innovative event that celebrates football and officially recognizes the best achievements of the past year on and off the field,” said Infantino.
“Further information on the award categories, the nominations and the voting process as well as the dates of the event will be announced at a later date,” said the world association.
