He was one of the best players on the Old Continent, so he went overseas to try his luck. But Tomáška’s overseas mission lasted only 22 games, in which he scored 5 points. But some of them had more weight than it seems at first glance.
After excellent seasons in Swedish Färjestad, David Tomášek decided to go overseas. He was clear from the first courtship. He only wanted a one-way contract, he wanted to fight for a place in the first team. The farm no longer interested him. She was a waste of time for him at his age.
And he lived too. In early April, he signed a 1-season contract worth $1.2 million with Edmonton. It seemed like an ideal destination. Playing alongside McDavid with Draisaitl. Participant in two final series from previous seasons in a packed squad. But the reality was a little different.
At the beginning, it looked like he could be a member of the elite formations, but he only lasted there for a while. Tomášek then wandered around in the fourth, at most third formation, moving about 10 minutes per match and gradually disappeared from the lineup completely.
Now, journalist Jesse Courville-Lynch, who focuses on the events in hockey Edmonton, wrote that the Czech forward has agreed with the Oilers to terminate the contract and will head back to Sweden.
Although all transfers are frozen until December 28, even the Swedish portal Expressen is clear that Tomášek will move back to Färjestad, which still owns the rights to him, after the transfer gates open.
Photos have even appeared on social networks showing the Czech striker at the airport with hockey sticks. “Tomasek is flying to Europe – the formalities before returning to Färjestad have been completed,” the Swedish Värmlands Folkblad reported on the situation.
But Tomášek’s career in the NHL was also accompanied by bright moments. He scored an assist in the very first game. And it was no ordinary assist. He contributed to Leon Draisaitl’s 400th goal with the premiere recording.
The first goal came in his seventh game with the Oilers. At Rogers Place, at the beginning of the 17th minute against Montreal, he shot from the left circle and, with the necessary amount of luck, opened a scoring account in the best hockey league in the world.
From December 13, he did not intervene in the match at all and was only a spectator. Those days are probably over. After 22 games, 3 goals and 2 assists, David Tomášek is leaving the NHL and heading back to where he dominated.
In the Swedish league in the 2023/24 season, he became the top scorer in the regular season with 25 goals in 52 matches, and last year he even became the first Czech to win productivity. In addition, he was voted the most valuable player of the SHL.
