Jean-Louis Gasset: Montpellier Legend Dies

The coach and emblematic figure of French football Jean-Louis Gasset died on Friday December 26 at the age of 72, said the Montpellier club, for whom he was successively a player and coach.

The former midfielder spent almost his entire playing career in Montpellier (1975-1985), contributing to the growth of this neighborhood club co-founded by his father Bernard with Louis Nicollin, before coaching there on several occasions, the last time less than a year ago.

“Child of the club”

“A child of the club, he left his mark on all those who met him with his professionalism, his kindness and his thirst for transmission”reacted the MHSC, stressing that it had “lost one of its emblematic figures”. “Our sadness is immense when we remember his smile, his inimitable voice and his keen sense of expression”added the Hérault club.

A native of Montpellier, Jean-Louis Gasset has never stopped returning to his favorite club. But he has also coached other French clubs including Saint-Étienne, Bordeaux and more recently Olympique de Marseille.

Long an inseparable assistant to Laurent Blanc, in Bordeaux, with the Blues (from 2010 to 2012) then with Paris SG (from 2013 to 2016), he was also coach of the Ivory Coast, until the last CAN-2023, resigning in the middle of a tournament that the Elephants had finally won at home.
