Hans Cornelis will start 2026 undefeated with Sporting Charleroi, a hell of a performance given the Zebras’ Dantesque program. Rik De Mil’s former assistant will stay until the end of the season, it’s a virtual certainty.
When Rik De Mil left Charleroi, his assistant Hans Cornelis immediately filled the role of interim T1 with the prospect of finishing the season. We know that Mehdi Bayat is neither the type to do crazy things nor to rush: if Cornelis convinced during the end-of-year matches, he had a good chance of staying in place.
And what an outcome for the ex-T2: two draws against great teams (Union and Genk), and a resounding victory at Anderlecht. “A deserved victory in my opinion,” said Hans Cornelis in a post-match press conference.
Hans Cornelis doesn’t want to say he earned his place
No question, however, of pushing himself from the collar for the former coach of Sporting Lokeren (for three seasons all the same!). “I don’t have the right to say that I earned my place. I didn’t achieve that alone: it’s also thanks to my players, my staff. We’ll see what happens in the coming days, but I’m happy this evening,” recognizes Cornelis.
His record speaks for itself, especially since the RCSC played very well in sequences this evening. “Is it enough to stay? You can never be sure in football, but I think Charleroi is happy with my work,” admits the Zèbres coach. “I will check with Mehdi and Pierre-Yves in the coming days.”

One thing is certain: if we ask the players of Sporting Charleroi for their opinion, they will support the candidacy of Hans Cornelis. “The players also believe in this project and that’s especially what I’m happy with,” he concludes with a smile.
