They were days of wine and roses in Gasca. Seven victories and one defeat that placed IDK Euskotren at the top of … the classification, as a co-leader. But it was turning the last page of the calendar and the ‘horribilis’ December began for the San Sebastián team, who yesterday had a poor game in defense to add the fourth consecutive defeat of the season, all in this last month of the year. First Ensino, then Girona and Cadí, and yesterday it was the newly promoted Leganés who emerged victorious against Azu Muguruza’s pupils, who were in tow throughout the match.
Because from Rosó Buch’s basket that made it 6-5 with just three minutes of play, IDK Euskotren was always behind on the scoreboard. In a first quarter of give and take, the Madrid team exploited the scoring ability of two of their best players, Herlihy and Andelova, to gain distance in the scoreboard (15-20).
A triple by Andelova gave the visitors the maximum, but a 7-0 run brought the San Sebastian team within one (22-23, min. 13.51) and forced the Leganés coach to call a timeout. The Madrid team continued to score with great ease against the weak San Sebastian defense, which still held up the pace to reach half-time two behind (29-31).
No reaction
The IDK did not react after passing through the locker room, and far from closing the gap, they saw how Leganés began to cement a difference that was going to be difficult to bridge. A 0-6 partial for the visitors once again opened a gap on the scoreboard (32-41, min. 25), but Lara González, with two free throws, stopped the bleeding before the Madrid players dealt an almost definitive stab at the duel with another partial that put the maximum in the light (36-50).
Muguruza’s team perhaps recorded their best minutes of play in the last quarter, when things were looking worst and the water was already up to their necks. After a triple from Sangare, IDK began to close the gap point by point with a great Robinson, who until then had tiptoed through the match. The San Sebastián team managed to get below the psychological barrier of ten points until they were just six points behind (52-58) with still half a quarter left. But Leganés’ legs did not shake when Gasca pressed harder, seeing a comeback as possible, and the lack of success of the Gipuzkoans in the offensive phase caused the victory to finally fly away from Donostia.
