More and more residents, helped by the recent brochure campaign and updated website, know how to find the rackets, dust them off and try them out for 3 evenings without obligation in Sports Hall de Heister on Wednesday evenings.
But how did it actually come about? Badminton probably came over from Asia. In India a game was played called poona, possibly after the city of Poona. The British ruled India and took the game home. It must be said that in medieval Europe there were also games with some kind of rackets and shuttlecocks. What we know in any case: rich English people liked to hit half a ball with feathers at each other in 1873. The game was called badminton.
How is that possible? The Duke of Beaufort must have enjoyed the game. Because it was played on his estate in Gloucestershire. The name of his castle: Badminton House. In the tenth century the place was known as Badimyncgtun, which meant something like ‘farm of the people of Beadumund.’
