Simon Mignolet should probably not see his contract extended in Bruges. Despite its desire to continue the adventure and the success it experienced with the Blauw & Zwart, the club wishes to explore another option. The coming months will therefore be an important period of reflection for the goalkeeper.
The fact that Simon Mignolet does not receive a new contract at Club Brugge does not mean that Nordin Jackers will automatically become number 1. FCB also wants to create competition for the goalkeeper position and, in the event of Mignolet’s departure, will look for a quality replacement.
Mignolet doesn’t want to hang up yet
Simon Mignolet’s situation is special. At 37, he could consider retirement, but despite this season’s injuries, he wants to play for several more years. He still loves being on the field.
He is not interested in a second goalkeeper role at a big club. His priority is to play, and not in a mid-table team or one that is struggling to maintain itself. He wants to play in a team that fights for titles. If these conditions are met, he really wants to continue his career.
A new adventure abroad?
This probably means he will have to look for a club outside of Belgium again. It is not an easy decision, as he has built a home in Knokke with his family in recent years. Leaving that is never easy.
As we can see, these are many questions that Mignolet will have to answer in the months to come. He initially hoped to end his career in Bruges, but emotion gradually gave way to ambition. The club no longer wants to pay a high salary for a 37-year-old goalkeeper, regardless of his past contribution.

This in no way affects Mignolet’s legacy within the Blauw-Zwart. His record speaks for itself: four league titles, a cup, four times Goalkeeper of the Year and a Golden Boot. Few players could be dissatisfied with such a career. However, Mignolet still has the motivation. The desire is always present.
