The Orlando Magic fail in the NBA Cup without Franz Wagner, and champion OKC is also eliminated in the semifinals.
Without Franz Wagner, the Orlando Magic missed the NBA Cup final. In the second game after the German basketball star’s injury, the team from Florida lost to the New York Knicks in Las Vegas with 120:132. Top star Jalen Brunson led New York with 40 points in the final against the San Antonio Spurs.
Franz Wagner suffered a sprained left ankle against the Knicks last Sunday and will be out for a few weeks. His brother Moritz is about to make his comeback for Orlando after tearing his cruciate ligament, but was still missing against the Knicks. Tristan da Silva didn’t score any points in around twelve minutes of play.
Spurs kick out OKC
Led by exceptional French talent Victor Wembanyama, the Spurs defeated the reigning NBA champion Oklahoma City Thunder 111:109 in the other semifinal – it was only the second defeat of the season for OKC around Isaiah Hartenstein.
Wembanyama scored 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds in his comeback after an injury. Hartenstein had ten points and nine rebounds.
The NBA Cup has been held during the current season since 2023. Except for the final, all games count as regular season games. The defending champions are the Milwaukee Bucks. The final takes place on Wednesday night.
