The 2030 Winter Olympics could welcome new disciplines. Edgar Grospiron suggests adding gravel and trail running to attract world stars.
Edgar Grospiron is ambitious and no one will blame him for it. President of the organizing committee for the 2030 Olympics, the former Olympic mogul ski champion indulged in an astonishing confession in front of a few journalists present in Val d’Isère. The president would like to add additional sports to the Winter Olympic program for the Games taking place in the French Alps.

As revealed RMC Sport, Grospiron would like to add sports that, at first glance, don’t seem so wintery. The skier would like to defend the addition of gravel and trail (among others) to the list of additional sports. Two very popular disciplines at the moment. And the latter has an idea in mind: attracting world stars, particularly those from cycling.

“The Winter Games, with sports like that (trail, gravel, cyclocross, freeride, Editor’s note), are stronger, more universal Winter Games. We are going to look for countries that are not at the Winter Games […]. You’re going to look for stars that you don’t have. If tomorrow you have Pogacar or Wout Van Aert you say to yourself, it looks good,” said Edgar Grospiron.
So, real idea or utopian proposal? Time will tell. The proposed additional sports will be submitted to the 146th session of the IOC in 2026.
