Pomigliano d’Arco, 10 December – In a historical moment in which press freedom is put to the test in many countries around the world, the role of journalism returns to the center of public debate. Between threats, reckless complaints, economic pressures and the advance of digital platforms, information is experiencing a phase of profound transformation which directly affects the quality of democracy. The meeting starts from these questions “Informing, getting informed: journalism and democracy”an opportunity to reflect on the value of information as a common good and the responsibility of those who produce it and those who receive it.
Hundreds of journalists killed while doing their work, reported the Reportes Sans Frontières, but there are threats to press freedom all over the world. Italy is among the countries facing a very delicate period between direct threats to journalists, lawsuits and European rules not implemented. What is the relationship between freedom of the press and democracy? Quality journalism fights against fake news and the excessive power of big tech, and what respect is there for citizens? These are the themes at the center of the meeting “Informing, getting informed: journalism and democracy” with the journalist Nunzio Unjustdirector of Italia Notizie 24.
The meeting is organized by the Giorgio La Pira Center in Pomigliano d’Arco for Thursday 11 December at 5.30 pm at the Center’s headquarters in Via Terracciano. The introduction to the meeting will be by Caterina De FalcoPresident of the La Pira Center.
