Halfway through the Formula 1 season, a fifth world title in a row seemed like a utopia for Max Verstappen, but according to Helmut Marko, two men continued to believe in a fifth title triumph. The fact that it ultimately did not work was even more painful and was the reason for his departure from the energy drink manufacturer.
“This season I was the first and then, together with Gianpiero Lambiase, the only one within the team who still believed in Max Verstappen’s world title.”
“We were working with a lot of enthusiasm and dedication and that is why it was a huge disappointment when it did not work out. From that disappointment the decision was made that this is a good time to retire,” said Marko in conversation with Small newspaper.
Red Bull ‘not chaotic’
However, Marko does not leave the ranks with an unpleasant feeling, on the contrary: “I am leaving with a good feeling. I am leaving on good terms with Red Bull and will certainly be seen on the circuit again.”
“I think the team is in good shape and I certainly won’t leave a chaotic mess behind. Everything is fine and improvements will certainly be made in certain positions.”
The newspaper writes that Marko’s position will not be filled one-on-one by someone else. How does Marko view that? What will the ‘new’ structure be like?
“Red Bull has to make that decision, so I can’t say anything about it. I only announced my decision on Monday in Dubai. They are certainly not in a hurry, because they have to look for the best possible solutions.”
