Danish Doubles Split: Immediate Breakup

Danish Badminton Powerhouse Splits: Kjær and Søgaard Go Their Seperate Ways After Nearly Four Years as a Team.

After an impressive nearly four-year run as a formidable Danish men’s doubles partnership, 26-year-old Rasmus Kjær and 28-year-old Frederik Søgaard have announced their split.

This duo, once considered one of denmark’s strongest pairings, currently sits at a respectable No. 19 in the world rankings. Their final match together was the 1/8 final at the Paris World cup, marking the end of an era for this talented team.

Since january 2022,Kjær and Søgaard have been a consistent presence on the World Tour, achieving a string of notable results. They started their journey with victories at the Challenger level, steadily climbing the ranks to compete against the world’s elite. However, they never quite reached the pinnacle of the sport, with their biggest achievements being three runner-up finishes, including a highlight at the Canada Open in 2023.

Injuries, Near Misses, and a Glimpse of Greatness

A meaningful moment for the pair came during the European Championships in the spring. kjær and Søgaard reached the semi-finals, showcasing the potential for a championship run. Though, a tearful Søgaard was forced to withdraw due to an injury, a setback that ultimately derailed their momentum.

Shortly after, they returned to claim a bronze medal, but this result, in retrospect, symbolized a partnership that, despite flashes of brilliance, never fully realized its immense potential.

according to expert Jim Laugesen, speaking to TV2 Sporten, the decision to split is both surprising and understandable. He noted that while the pair could challenge the world’s best, they struggled with consistent high-level performance over extended tournaments.

This breakup has immediate implications for other Danish players. Badminton Denmark’s sporting management has already moved to reshuffle the men’s doubles lineup.

Rasmus Kjær is set to team up with 21-year-old Christian Faust Kjær. Faust Kjær recently impressed at the Thailand Open, reaching the final alongside William Kryger boe.
Søgaard’s Future Uncertain

While Rasmus Kjær has a new partner lined up, Frederik Søgaard’s path forward is less clear. He is currently working with the coaching team to develop a plan for his future, with many suggesting a break from the sport might be in order.

Head coach Thomas Stavngaard expressed his hope for Søgaard’s continued career:

“we very much hope that Frederik wants to continue his badminton career as he is a fantastic badminton player. At the same time, we have full respect for the need for a break.”

This split opens up a new partnership for Kjær and creates significant uncertainty for Søgaard. He was originally slated to compete in upcoming tournaments in Vantaa, Finland, odense, and Paris this fall, but he will now be absent from these events.

Kjær and Søgaard achieved two Danish championships and were part of several memorable matches throughout their partnership. While they consistently showed flashes of world-class talent, they ultimately couldn’t establish themselves as a regular top-tier contender.Their journey, though ending, leaves a mark on Danish badminton.
