Townsend later apologized in a video for their statements.
“This is the craziest I’ve ever seen … and people eat it,” writes Taylor Townsend (WTA 116) in a caption for one of her videos on social media. The 29-year-old, who is currently in Shenzhen for the final of the Billie Jean King Cup, shows her horror on Instagram about some of the dishes served in the Chinese city.
The dishes included turtle, ox frogs and sea cucumbers – all traditional ingredients in many parts of China. «I have to speak to the HR, because what the hell! Turtle and ox frog are totally crazy, »says Townsend over the Chinese menu.
Ugly comments on the net
The number one in the women’s double rankings quickly gets under fire due to its comments on social media. A contribution entitled “American tennis player criticizes Chinese food” is called up millions of times on the Chinese platform Weibo.
In a comment under the post it says: «It is normal not to eat offal, ox frogs and turtles. As a Chinese, I don’t eat these things either, but you have to show respect. Just because you don’t like them does not mean that everyone thinks that way. »

Other users write that they would cultivate prejudices and do discrimination. Also at her appearance in the stadium of Shenzhens there was a whistle concert by the Chinese fans for the 29-year-old. The criticism finally prompted the tennis player to publish an apology video in her Instagram story.
“I am aware that as a professional athlete I have the big privilege to be able to travel the whole world and to experience cultural differences, which I love about my job so much,” she said, adding how friendly people at the tournament were this week.
