Interview wiht Iván Ocón Gutiérrez: The Driving Force Behind Colima’s Badminton Renaissance
Moderator: Welcome, everyone, to another edition of Sports Insights, where we dive deep into the stories shaping the world of sports. Today, we’re thrilled to have Iván Ocón Gutiérrez, a renowned sports promoter and coach from Colima, Mexico, joining us. Iván has been instrumental in organizing the recent Los Reyes del Bádminton festival and is a key figure in promoting badminton in the region. Welcome, Iván!
Iván Ocón Gutiérrez: Thank you for having me. It’s a pleasure to be here and share the exciting developments happening in Colima’s badminton scene.
Moderator: Let’s jump right in. The Los Reyes del Bádminton festival just concluded its tenth edition, bringing together players from across Colima, Coquimatlán, comala, Tecomán, and Villa de Álvarez. What does this event mean for the sport in the region?
Iván Ocón Gutiérrez: This festival is a cornerstone for badminton in Colima. It’s not just a competition; it’s a celebration of the sport and a platform for young talent to shine. Over the years, we’ve seen participation grow, and this year, we had around 20 players competing across children and youth categories. The support from families and the community has been incredible, and it’s a testament to how far we’ve come.
Moderator: You mentioned the growth of participation. How do you see this impacting the future of badminton in Colima?
Iván Ocón Gutiérrez: The growth is phenomenal. We’re seeing more kids picking up rackets and getting involved, which is crucial for the sport’s sustainability. The festival also serves as a qualifier for state-level competitions, and this year,18 players were selected to represent Colima. These athletes are the future, and with the right support, they could go on to compete at national and even international levels.
Moderator: Speaking of support, alejandro Rodríguez Alvarado, the general director of Incode, praised your efforts and highlighted the need for more frequent events. Do you agree with his assessment?
Iván Ocón gutiérrez: Absolutely. While the festival is a great start, we need more regular competitions and training opportunities to keep the momentum going.Badminton is still a niche sport in Mexico, and consistent exposure is key to its growth. I’m glad Incode is recognizing this and working to integrate badminton into school curricula. Pairing it with activities like chess and physical education is a brilliant way to engage students and build a strong foundation.
Moderator: That’s an captivating point. Integrating badminton into schools could be a game-changer. What challenges do you foresee in implementing this initiative?
Iván Ocón Gutiérrez: the main challenge is resources—both in terms of equipment and trained coaches. Badminton requires specific gear, like rackets and shuttlecocks, and not all schools have the budget for that. Additionally, we need more coaches who understand the sport and can teach it effectively. However,I’m optimistic. With the collaboration between Incode and the Secretariat of Education and Culture, I believe we can overcome these hurdles.
Moderator: Let’s talk about the upcoming state-level competition in February. What are your expectations for the athletes who qualified from the festival?
Iván Ocón Gutiérrez: I have high hopes for them.the competition will be fierce, but our players have shown great potential. The U-13, U-15, and U-17 categories are packed with talent, and this is their chance to prove themselves on a bigger stage. My advice to them is to stay focused, train hard, and enjoy the experience.
Moderator: As we wrap up, what message would you like to share with our readers who are passionate about sports and community progress?
Iván Ocón Gutiérrez: My message is simple: Get involved. Whether it’s badminton or any other sport, your support makes a difference. Attend events, cheer for the athletes, and if possible, volunteer or contribute to local sports initiatives. Together, we can build a stronger, healthier, and more united community through sports.
Moderator: Thank you, Iván, for your insights and dedication to promoting badminton in Colima. It’s inspiring to see how much impact one person can have on a sport and a community.
