At teh Halle Gilles-Fermaud, Laurianne Navas, founder and president of the Gignac Badminton club, established in February 2024, welcomed key supporters of the club. Among them were Didier Fiault, president of the local Groupama branch, and Jefferson Vinois,CEO of the eponymous group, both of whom are sponsors. Groupama contributed by providing team jerseys, which were officially handed over during the event. Also present was Richard Garcia, representing the city council.
Since its inception, the club has made a significant impact in the competitive badminton scene. Starting its journey in September, the club is affiliated with the National Federation (FFBaD), which boasts over 200,000 members. This affiliation has enabled the club to participate in official competitions, where it has achieved an impressive record by winning all six matches played so far. Currently, the club leads its departmental group, showcasing its rapid rise in the sport.
“I’ve been passionate about badminton for a decade,” shares Laurianne Navas, “and I currently hold a D9 individual ranking. My vision was to create opportunities for young middle and high school students to engage in competitive badminton, which led to the formation of this team.”
Previously, aspiring competitive players in the area had to travel to nearby towns like juvignac, Saint-Gély-du-Fesc, or Castelnau-le-Lez, as local clubs primarily focused on recreational play. The Gignac Badminton club has quickly grown to 50 members, with a balanced mix of 20 girls and 30 boys. The club also offers introductory programs for children aged 14 and above. The Lycée Simone-Veil, which provides access to its facilities, and the local town hall have been instrumental in supporting the club’s growth.
“One of the key advantages,” notes Marc Paoli, the club’s secretary,“is that the venue already features specialized floor markings and nets that meet official standards.” Laurianne adds, “Our goal is to secure more training slots for young players and help them reach higher competitive levels.” The club already boasts a few standout players, including Dylan, a high school student at Lycée Simone-Veil, who holds a D8 ranking. The next step is D7, which opens doors to regional competitions.
Dylan shares his experience: “I used to train in castelnau, which required a 45-minute commute. The travel became too much, and I stopped competing.Joining this club has reignited my passion, as I now train with skilled players right here in Gignac.”
