THE SPORT SCAN – Following a storied career with Olympique Lyonnais, Chelsea, and the French national team, Florent Malouda has made a surprising transition from football to military service, marking a permanent shift in his life’s trajectory.
Life often takes unexpected turns,and Florent Malouda’s journey is no exception. The former French international,who earned 80 caps and scored 9 goals under the guidance of Raymond Domenech,has embarked on a new chapter. After retiring from professional football in 2018, Malouda has joined the citizen reserve of the 3rd Foreign Infantry regiment (REI) as a combat officer, showcasing his commitment to service beyond the pitch.
“The 3rd Foreign Infantry Regiment is proud to welcome Mr. Florent Malouda into its citizen reserve as an officer. Following an illustrious football career, he is dedicated to imparting the values of dedication and discipline to the youth of Guyana, working alongside the legionnaires of the 3rd REI,” stated the Corps Commander of the Foreign Legion in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

The citizen reserve program provides a platform for prominent individuals, including artists and retired athletes, to support and promote the military’s values and missions without requiring active service. Malouda,a native of Cayenne,will be stationed with the regiment in Kourou,located in the northern part of the department. This move also symbolizes a homecoming for the former striker, who represented Guyana in international matches during the twilight of his career, reconnecting with his roots in a meaningful way.
