Nestled on the eastern edge of the Boso Peninsula, togane City in Chiba Prefecture lies roughly 50 kilometers from Tokyo’s bustling center. The halls of Chiba Gakugei high School are set to be adorned with a celebratory banner, honoring pitcher Harun Kikuchi, a towering right-hander who secured the fifth pick in the 2024 professional baseball draft by the Hiroshima Toyo Carp.
“I joined the Chiba Gakugei High school baseball club in July last year, but by November, I was let go. In those few months, I uncovered unsettling truths about the coach and the institution. Without important changes, the young athletes who choose this school will not see the rewards they deserve,” shared a former staff member.
Mitsuru Tsujii, 61, who served as the dormitory supervisor and assistant coach for the school’s baseball team, revealed these concerns in an interview with the magazine.
Established in 2000, the Chiba gakugei High School Baseball Club boasts a roster of around 100 players. The team made history in 2021 by clinching their first spring Chiba Prefectural tournament title, followed by victories in the summer and fall seasons. Infielder Naoki Arizono, a standout player during that period, was selected second overall by the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters in the same year’s draft, becoming the school’s inaugural professional baseball player. While the team has yet to compete in the prestigious Koshien tournament, they are now recognized as one of the prefecture’s top contenders. Under the leadership of Coach Shinsuke Takakura, who took the helm in 2017, the team continues to strive for excellence.
