Contract Extension Talks Paused Until After the 2026 NFL Season

Negotiations between the Houston Texans and their starting quarterback hit a wall ahead of the team’s regular-season opener. According to reporting from ESPN and other league sources, both parties made a serious effort to complete a new deal before kickoff. However, the two sides ultimately agreed to halt discussions and revisit a long-term contract once the campaign concludes.

The signal-caller is currently under contract through his 2027 campaign after the Texans picked up his fifth-year option, which is worth $25.9 million fully guaranteed. Texans general manager Nick Caserio had previously said that once Week 1 of the regular season kicks off, talks will be tabled until next year. Stroud is set to play it out in 2026 and bet on himself in the final year of his four-year, $36.28 million rookie contract.

Market Pressures and Financial Valuations Drive the Delay

While Stroud was more than open to a deal and wants to be in Houston long term, the looming quarterback market for the 2027 season had an effect on his decision. Rumors indicate the Texans were willing to go north of $50 million per-year for Stroud, a figure that seemed possible after Baker Mayfield’s $55 million per-year contract over three seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers was recently agreed to.

At the same time, a quarterback contract with a $70 million average annual value is not an impossibility for next offseason. The current ceiling is $63 million in new money thanks to the extension Patrick Mahomes signed this spring. With so many young stars extension-eligible for the first time following the season—including Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, Bo Nix, and Jayden Daniels—the benchmark is set to rise even higher. Furthermore, an extension for Lamar Jackson would no doubt make him the highest-paid quarterback whenever the Baltimore Ravens star signs, raising the quarterback market even further.

Entering his fourth year in the NFL, Stroud is looking to reclaim the same form he had in his rookie campaign in 2023, when he was named the Offensive Rookie of the Year after completing 63.9 percent of his passes for 4,108 yards, 23 touchdowns and five interceptions across 15 regular-season games while adding 39 carries for 167 yards and three scores.

Following that historic rookie season, Stroud has struggled in each of the past two seasons. In 2024, he had 3,727 passing yards with 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions while being sacked 52 times, the second most in the league. In 2025, he finished the regular season with 3,041 passing yards, 19 touchdowns and eight interceptions while missing three games with a concussion.

By postponing talks, Stroud has tens, if not hundreds, of millions of dollars on the line this upcoming season. If he has a bounce-back season for the Texans, then he could be looking at a deal closer to $60 million per-year than $50 million, and should benefit from waiting no matter where his contract comes in. But another rough season, and Stroud might not have nearly as big of an offer on the table, though he still has the $25.9 million fully guaranteed fifth-year option on the books for 2027 to do it again. Texans fans will need to check back in this upcoming offseason, as the future of Stroud in Houston will likely be decided based on how he performs during the 2026 season.
