Ruud, welcome to the show!
Ruud Gullit: Thanks for having me. Always a pleasure to talk football!
Let’s jump right in. You recently revealed on Ziggo Sport that Louis van Gaal won’t be joining Kluivert in Indonesia. Can you give us a bit more context on that?
Ruud: Of course. I spoke with Patrick about his new role, and naturally, the question of a supporting team came up.We discussed Louis’s name, and Patrick expressed a strong desire to have him on board.
But, Louis, he’s a man who values his time and the life he’s built. He loves his family, enjoys traveling, playing golf, you know, the good things in life.
He’s earned that right after such an illustrious career.
The technical director role, it’s demanding - constant travel, scouting, building infrastructure. It’s a lot to take on, especially at this stage of his life.
You’re suggesting that, despite the allure of working with Kluivert and coaching the Indonesian national team, the demands of the technical director position were simply too much for Van Gaal?
Ruud: precisely! Louis is already contributing significantly to Ajax in an advisory role. It allows him to share his immense knowledge and experience without the burdens of constant travel and the operational side of things. It’s a perfect balance for him at this point in his life.
Captivating point. Do you think Van Gaal coudl have made a real difference for the Indonesian national team?
Ruud: Absolutely. Louis is a mastermind. His tactical acumen, his ability to motivate players,it’s unparalleled. There’s no doubt he could have helped Kluivert shape a formidable squad.
But, you have to respect his decision. He’s earned the right to choose how he spends his time.
I think this is a lesson for all of us, isn’t it? That retirement, it’s not just about stopping work, it’s about finding a balance that suits yoru lifestyle and priorities.
