Hidalgo Taekwondo Star Uriel Gomeztagle Sets Sights on World Championship and Paris 2024

“My primary objective this year is to earn a place on the Mexican team for the World Championship in October,” gomeztagle stated. “The pre-selection tournament is scheduled for January, and I’m persistent to give it my all.”
Gomeztagle’s approach to achieving his goals is rooted in a beliefs of enjoyment and continuous learning. “I believe that relishing the journey and learning from past experiences are crucial for success,” he explained. “The road to the Paris 2024 Olympics is a marathon, not a sprint. Its a four-year commitment, and we’re just getting started. We need to accumulate points and steadily progress.”
The competition within Mexico’s taekwondo scene is fierce, with Gomeztagle acknowledging the formidable challenge posed by his former national team colleagues. “Some of my closest friends are also my toughest rivals,” he admitted. “Thay are incredibly talented athletes, and we push each other to be our best.”

uriel Gomeztagle: Thank you for having me. I’m feeling confident and ready to take the next step in my career.
Let’s talk about your aspirations for 2024. The World Championship in China is a monumental goal, and you’ve been very open about your desire to represent Mexico there.
Gomeztagle: Absolutely. I’m laser-focused on securing my spot on the Mexican national team. The pre-selection tournament in January is crucial, and I’m putting everything I have into preparing for it.
You’ve mentioned the importance of enjoying the journey. In a sport as demanding as Taekwondo, where the pressure is immense, how do you maintain that sense of enjoyment?
Gomeztagle: For me, it all comes down to passion. I love this sport – the discipline, the technical aspects, the thrill of competition. When that passion is at the forefront, the pressure fades away, and I can truly enjoy every step of the process.
Taekwondo in Mexico is incredibly competitive, with many talented athletes vying for coveted spots. How do you handle that pressure, notably competing with former teammates?
Gomeztagle: It’s definitely a challenge. Some of my closest friends are my toughest rivals, pushing me to be my best. We have a deep respect for each other’s abilities,and that competitive spirit only elevates our game.
You’ve spoken about your commitment to mentoring younger Taekwondo athletes in Hidalgo. How notable is it for you to give back to the community that shaped you?
Gomeztagle: Hidalgo has a thriving Taekwondo community,and I’m incredibly proud to be a part of it. Sharing my experience and knowledge with the younger generation is essential.They represent the future of our sport, and I wont to empower them to reach their full potential.
