This trend extends beyond basketball, with NFL stars like Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelsey, as well as NBA players mike Conley Jr. and Bobby Portis Jr.,also facing similar threats.
Security experts warn that the accessibility of athletes’ schedules online, coupled with their perceived wealth, makes them prime targets. William Cutler, CEO of Texas-based security firm Onyx Solutions, emphasizes the ease with which criminals can identify vulnerable windows of opportunity.
The FBI urges athletes to take proactive measures, including reporting suspicious activity, conducting thorough inventories of valuables, and bolstering home security systems.They also advise against oversharing personal information on social media, which can provide valuable intel to potential criminals.
The FBI spokesperson emphasized their commitment to monitoring potential threats and collaborating with law enforcement and the private sector to combat this growing menace.
This alarming trend isn’t limited to athletes. Hollywood celebrities, like Keanu Reeves, have also fallen victim to these sophisticated burglaries. Last year, Reeves’ Rolex watch, a commemorative piece from the “John Wick 4” movie, was stolen from his home and later recovered in Chile.
Former FBI Special Agent Bobby Chacon stresses the organized nature of these crimes, highlighting the meticulous planning and execution involved. To shed light on this growing issue, we sat down with retired NBA powerhouse, Carlos “The Steel” Santiago, who during his illustrious career playing for the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles lakers saw firsthand the pressures and security concerns that come with fame and fortune.
Moderator: Carlos,thanks for joining us today.These recent incidents involving athletes like Luka Doncic and Tyler Seguin are certainly troubling. Have you personally experienced anything similar during your career?
Carlos Santiago: You know, thankfully I was fortunate enough to not experience a full-blown home invasion. But, I definitely had my share of unsettling moments. There were times when fans woudl show up at my doorstep unannounced, or strange cars would linger outside my house for too long. It made you constantly aware of your surroundings, knowing that your every move was possibly being watched.
Moderator: it must have been incredibly unnerving.The FBI has highlighted the use of technology like drones and Wi-Fi jamming devices by these SATG groups. Does that add another layer of fear for athletes?
Carlos Santiago: Absolutely. Technology has blurred the lines between privacy and accessibility. It’s scary to think that criminals can now use drones to scout your property or disable your security systems remotely.It feels like the game has changed, and frankly, it’s not in our favor. In my day, a high fence and a strong door felt like enough.Now, it truly seems like you need Fort Knox just to feel safe.
Moderator: You mentioned “the game has changed.” Do you think athletes are adequately prepared for these new threats?
Carlos Santiago: I’m not so sure. We’re trained to be physically strong, mentally tough, and to face opponents on the court. But dealing with the psychological toll of being a constant target, that’s a different beast altogether. Teams need to do more to educate athletes about these threats, about online safety, and about the importance of being proactive with their security.
Moderator: The FBI has urged athletes to be more cautious online, limiting the sharing of personal data. Do you think athletes need to sacrifice some of their privacy in order to stay safe?
Carlos Santiago: It’s a tough call. We’re encouraged to connect with fans, to be open and relatable. But the reality is, every post, every check-in, can potentially give criminals more ammunition. It’s a fine line to walk,and it’s a conversation we need to have as a community – athletes,fans,teams,and law enforcement.
Moderator: What advice would you give young athletes entering professional sports today regarding their safety and security?
carlos Santiago: First and foremost, know your worth.Your safety and well-being are paramount. Don’t be afraid to ask for help, to invest in security measures, and to surround yourself with trustworthy people. Don’t let the fear control you, but don’t be naive either.
