The disclosure formalizes a reality that has simmered for years across the club’s multi-sport sections, even as past projections promised a modern 15,000-seat arena alongside the ongoing modernization of the Spotify Camp Nou.
The Financial Reality Behind the Palau Omission
Club officials addressed the long-standing questions directly during the assembly proceedings. Ferran Olivé, the club’s vice president of economy, explained the financial rationale behind prioritizing the football stadium over the multi-sport venue. According to Olivé, statements made at the assembly emphasized that the existing Palau Blaugrana does not generate the kind of revenue and profit margins required to justify immediate, massive capital expenditure. “The Palau Blaugrana does not give us any income and profit. That is why we focus on the Spotify Camp Nou. The Palau does not mean a differential fact in terms of revenue. We do not want to distract ourselves from the stadium. During the 2025–2026 financial year, the Palau Blaugrana brought in a total of 6,32 milions d’euros—marking a 4,1% increase compared to the previous fiscal period. By comparison, Spotify Camp Nou generated 225 milions d’euros the previous season and is projected to reach 285 milions d’euros in the current campaign, despite operating with a partially completed seating bowl and VIP boxes that remain pending, according to Regio7.
Escalating Costs and the 2021 Referendum Mandate
The board’s recent confirmation highlights the pressure of mounting expenses for the main stadium project. Costs for the Espai Barça redevelopment have climbed toward the 2.000 milions threshold. This financial inflation has left leadership constrained between soaring stadium expenditures and the parameters established by club members in the 2021 referendum.
During that 2021 vote, club members overwhelmingly approved a maximum expenditure cap of 1.500 milions—a budget intended to cover not only the major renovation of the Camp Nou but also the construction of a new Palau Blaugrana and a smaller adjacent arena known as the Petit Palau, as noted by Regio7. As costs outgrew initial projections, critics argue that executive statements drifted from the original planning scope. However, when the formal financial operations for the Espai Barça project were publicly presented in 2023, the breakdown allocated 1.071 milions for Camp Nou, 200 milions for contingencies, and 179 milions for financing costs—leaving out a distinct, dedicated 420 milions tranche for the Palau. The discrepancy prompted a collective of more than 40 club members to formally petition Joan Manuel Trayter, the club’s ombudsman (Síndic del Soci), and the FC Barcelona Economic Commission to demand explanations regarding compliance with the original referendum mandate.
“If you take the newspaper library since 2021, the board has been changing the message depending on what suited it. One lie after another. When we said they didn’t want to do it, they called us anti-Barçaites, and time has proved us right,” said David Fusté, a member of the La Resistència del Palau opinion group, in remarks reported by Regio7.
