In Tokyo, infections are increasing in the night districts

TOKYO – Japan’s capital Tokyo reported 58 new cases of coronavirus, as the number has been at its recent highs since last week and a senior government official said the trend is not looking good.

The number of cases in Tokyo rose to 60 on Sunday, the highest since early May, and almost doubled from 31 to five days ago. About half of the daily confirmed cases were found among employees or customers in the Tokyo nightlife district.

Tokyo’s numbers have peaked since an emergency was lifted in late May.

“We are watching the latest developments closely,” Economy Minister Yasutoshi Nishimura told reporters. “Honestly, it makes me feel pretty bad.”

He said he plans to meet with Tokyo governor Yuriko Koike to discuss the situation and a new set of precautions that would help prevent disease prevention and maintain economic activity. Koike planned to announce new measures to monitor infections on Tuesday.

The most recent cases bring Tokyo’s total infections to 6,172 with 325 deaths – about a third of the national total.
