The 2024 NFL Draft is right around the corner on April 25, but there’s still plenty of time for surprises.
While the Patriots hold the No. 3 overall pick, behind the Bears (No. 1) and the Commanders (No. 2), rumors swirled over the past month that they could be looking to trade back in the draft. However, NFL Insider Adam Schefter made his case for why the move is improbable for New England.
“I’m not gonna tell you they won’t, of course they would for the right offer,” he said on his show “The Adam Schefter Podcast.” “But I think it’s going to be challenging.”

Adam Schefter doubling down on his podcast:
“The signs continue to point to Jayden Daniels going 2 to Washington… That means Caleb Williams goes 1, Jayden Daniels goes 2, bringing us to New England, which I think has a decision to make to take either Drake Maye or JJ McCarthy.” pic.twitter.com/pQy5Hdcdkm

Not only is the draft just two weeks away, Shefter explained, but the Patriots would risk losing out on the quarterback of their choice — a critical position they look to fill. An added complication to a potential trade-back is the hefty price of the No. 3 pick.
NBC Sports Boston’s Tom E. Curran pointed out on his “Patriots Talk Podcast” last week that a team would have to “give up a lot more” than three first-rounders in order to lure the Patriots out of No. 3.
“I think the first three teams stay where they are in all probability. And I think in all probability it goes Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, New England’s choice of QB,” Shefter said. “I think [New England] would have a decision to make as to whether it would take either Drake Maye or JJ McCarthy.”
Maye, the UNC signal caller who has long been considered a top-tier prospect, made a trip to Foxborough Friday on a Top 30 visit. The Patriots also hosted LSU’s Daniels the following Monday, with Michigan’s McCarthy expected to arrive next week.
