In order to cover as many types of fishing as possible, we have a wide selection of fishing rods. Where you can often use the same fishing reel for many different types of fishing, it is rare that the fishing rod fits across the fish shapes. Basically, it’s about how heavy the end tackle that sits at the end of the fishing line is. Sea rods are short and stiff rods, so that you can lift the several hundred gram pips up and down, while spinning rods for the coast are long and relatively soft, so that you can cast flashes and feeders far out on the reef. Typically, predator rods (rods for pike fishing) are stiff, so that they can cast with large wobblers and jerkbaits, while spinning rods for put & take should be light and delicate, so that you can cast with small through-holes and at the same time feel the trout’s small careful bites.
The fishing rod is an important part of the fishing equipment, and this large selection of rods can be difficult to find around. If you are in doubt about the length and casting weight of your future fishing rod, you can read more here.
If you still just want one all-round rod for several types of fishing, it is a good choice with a rod of 8-9 feet and a casting weight of 10-30 grams.
When it comes to fly rods, it is more about where you fish. One-handed fly rods are suitable for most fishing in Denmark, where you have plenty of room behind you for a back cast – such as during sea trout fishing on the coast, dry fly fishing in the small streams, put & take fishing or pike fishing. Two-handed rods and switch fly rods have their advantages in salmon and sea trout fishing, where you often stand with reeds and trees behind you and have very little room for a back cast. Common to all fly rods is that they are alpha-omega with a fly line that fits the rod. The easiest is to follow the AFTM system, where both fly rod and fly line are specified in “classes” (written as ex. #7). Choose here both rod and line in the same class.
At Lystfiskeren, we have both spinning reels (fixed spool reels), multi reels and fly reels in our range. Typically, a spinning reel will work for most fishing in Denmark, such as lake fishing, river fishing, coastal fishing and put & take fishing. If you have to choose one fishing reel for everything, it is also the traditional spinning reel that you should go for. A multi reel is often the preferred choice when it comes to sea fishing, trolling or predator fishing with heavy jerkbaits. In recent years, multi reels have also become very popular for vertical fishing, where you can very easily and quickly adjust the depth of your bait very precisely. The fly wheel differs considerably from the other fishing wheels by having room for a thick fly line. Be aware that a flywheel cannot be used on a spinning rod – or vice versa.
A fishing reel must be able to do more than just act as storage for the fishing line, and with a good quality reel you get both a safer landing of the fish and a longer cast. The fishing wheel is especially an important tool during the fight with the fish, where it must be able to stop the fish from swimming away – without the line breaking or the hook being pulled out by too much pressure. A good brake can allow the line to be pulled from the wheel in a smooth movement – and this secures the hook and protects the fishing line. When it comes to spinning reels, the line layout matters a lot for the length of your casts. The better the line layout design, the less resistance there is when the fishing line comes off the spool during a cast.
There are almost always fish to catch – regardless of the weather and conditions. But it is only with the right fishing clothing that you can go fishing in all kinds of weather. At Lystfiskeren, we have everything from the warm inner layers as well as hats and gloves to the dense outer layers such as waders, wading boots and wading jackets/rain jackets.
In Denmark, we are lucky enough to be able to fish all year round. Autumn, winter and early spring make tough demands on fishing clothing, and here it is important to have some insulating underlayers (or baselayers) under the wind and waterproof outer layer. You can advantageously dress in three layers: inner layer, middle layer and outer layer.
The inner layer must be insulating and have a comfortable surface. The middle layer must be warm and here a down jacket usually works exceptionally well. The outer layer must of course be waterproof and should consist of a wading jacket or rain jacket and possibly waders. And then it is an advantage if the outer layer is also breathable – that way condensation and moisture can escape, and you stay drier.
In the summer, it pays to invest in fishing clothing made from thin materials that dry quickly. Several of our fishing shirts and jumpers are made in cooling materials with sun protection, which are also ideal if the trip is heading towards the tropics. Fishing shirts also mean that you can have the fly box or other gear close at hand in the breast pocket when things need to go fast.
One of the most important things is what sits at the end of the fishing line. Fishing tackle comes in many different shapes and sizes, and at Lystfiskeren we have more than enough to catch all types of fish in Denmark. We have a wide range of the leading brands, such as Savage Gear, Strike Pro, Westin, Illex and Rapala.
It can be difficult to find out which type of tackle is best for the fish you want to catch. A good rule of thumb is to imitate what the fish eat. If you are fishing for pike, for example, a large wobbler or softbait that looks like a prey fish is a good choice. Graylings are often on the sea trout’s menu, so a slim flash or jig is a safe choice, while flies that look like shrimp, kelp fleas or gobblers are effective. In the stream, where the sea trout and salmon are drawn up to spawn and where they consume food to a lesser extent, you can provoke them to squat by using spinners. When sea fishing, you have to use heavy picks to get down to the bottom, where the fish typically stand. Put and take gear most often consists of small spinners, powerbait, or UL flashes and through-holes.
It is important to use the right type of lead as the last link between the fishing line and the tackle – especially if you are fishing with braided line. This can simply be a half to full meter piece of monoline or fluorocarbon. The reason for this is that the braided line can easily be worn out during the fight if the fish swims between stones or branches in the water. If you are fishing for pike, you should use a hook that is at least 0.80 mm thick – or a wire hook. We have a large selection of predator accessories that can handle the pike’s sharp teeth.
The term fishing tackle covers many things. From the very basics such as fishing rod, fishing reel and fishing line to the small extra parts and accessories that make the small difference on the fishing trip.
There are many types of fishing accessories. Some are directly necessary, while others are just nice-to-haves. At Lystfiskeren, we naturally have a wide range of everything, and this includes, among other things, tackle boxes, swivels and hooks, fishing nets and fishing sunglasses.
Accessories such as tackle boxes and fly boxes. is definitely a necessary form of fishing equipment. The many hooks on the end tackle can easily get stuck if you don’t store and transport it in a tackle box. We have a huge selection of storage options in many different sizes. Among other things, we have large tackle boxes for wobblers and jerkbaits and the very small fly boxes for flies. A fishing net can be the piece of fishing equipment that makes the difference between whether you land the fish or not. It is rare that you regret having brought your fishing net, but it can very easily happen that you regret not having it with you. In addition, a fishing net can help to spare fish that need to be released.
A good pair of fishing sunglasses with a polaroid filter is also a type of accessory that can make the difference. In addition to protecting your eyes from the harsh rays of the sun on completely cloudless days, polaroid glasses remove glare from the water surface and help you see through the water. For sight-fishing, such a pair of fishing sunglasses are absolutely indispensable, while during all other fishing they make it possible to see fish that follow your bait.
