A 20-year-old young man was indicted on Tuesday in Dijon with a view to a possible indictment for the murder of his sixty-year-old stepfather with a knife and baseball bat, the prosecution said. Sunday morning in Talant, in the suburbs of Dijon, a new argument broke out between the two men before the son-in-law grabbed a baseball bat which was in the home, hitting his father-in-law violently and several times, said the public prosecutor in Dijon, Olivier Caracotch.

The young man then grabbed a kitchen knife to stab his stepfather, also several times. The autopsy revealed “five stab wounds“, including an “planted in the skull“, as well as several violent blows of a baseball bat to the back of the head, having caused a “major bone crash“said the prosecutor at a press conference.

For about ten years, the stepson had shared accommodation with his stepfather and his mother, who were married. But the 61-year-old stepfather was “in conflict for years with the son-in-law whom he asked to leave the house, threatening him verbally on the background of excessive alcohol consumption».

The young man, who admitted the facts, is not known to the police, nor to justice, nor to social services. He explained his acting out by,the accumulation of threats and humiliationsfrom his father-in-law, but he clarified that it was only verbal harassment and not physical.

However, investigations are underway to determine whether violence was exercised by the stepfather, prior to the murder, in particular on the mother of the stepson. The latter indeed indicated that he had remained at the family home, despite the behavior of the stepfather and unlike his sister who had fled the home, in order, he said, to “protect his mother“. The suspect was being brought before an examining magistrate on Tuesday at midday. The prosecution requested an indictment for murder, punishable by a maximum of thirty years of criminal imprisonment, and pre-trial detention.
