So there is a big semifinal showdown at the ATP 500 event in Dubai. With a view to the draw, many a tennis fan probably secretly hoped so, now it’s highly official: With his convincing two-set success over the Croatian Borna Coric, Daniil Medvedev has fixed the dream semi-final against the Serbian Novak Djokovic. Who, as is well known, has been able to call himself the world number one again for a few weeks.
The duel with Croatian Coric started promisingly for Medvedev, who secured a break early on and closed the first section relatively safely. Thanks to the break to win the set 6: 3, the Russian also had the advantage of opening section two – and thus serving in advance. That’s the theory, but in practice there was a break in the first game of the sentence for the former world number one. And a little later a quick 0:2 deficit.
The Russian was unimpressed by this, played himself out of a tricky situation in the third game and then presented himself as solved. Coric had absolutely nothing to oppose the in-form Russian: Daniil Medvedev won six games in a row and thus fixed the impressively dominant 6: 3 and 6: 2 success. To illustrate the dominance towards the end of the match: The 2021 US Open champion secured all of the last 21 points of the match. The second semi-final in Dubai will be contested by Andrey Rublev and Alexander Zverev.
