Article: Ronaldo Veitía, emblematic Cuban judo coach, passed away

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel expressed his condolences to family, friends and the Cuban sports movement.

Veitía, architect of the greatest triumphs of judo for ladies in Cuba, including the collective world championship in 1999 and the Olympic one a year later, died today in this capital, where he was recovering from severe health conditions.

For his part, the president of the Cuban Institute of Sports (Inder), Osvaldo Vento, also regretted the physical departure of the legendary strategist.

Initially leading the men’s sector, Veitía’s great moments from the coach’s chair were after assuming the direction of the female cast at the beginning of the 90s of the last century.

Together with the also deceased Eugenio George (volleyball) and Alcides Sagarra (boxing), Veitía was part of the golden triad of Cuban sports coaches after 1959, with several Olympic and world crowns.
