It remains to be seen how the over-30s at the Red Devils see their future with the national team. The 33-year-old Axel Witsel, who remained below his level at the World Cup, has made himself heard on Instagram and seems to indicate that he does not see this World Cup as an end point. “Over time we can start to focus on the future again, better days are coming for Belgium,” he writes.

Eden Hazard and Toby Alderweireld are thought to be putting an end to their international careers, although they have not yet officially spoken out. Jan Vertonghen and Dries Mertens then indicated that they want to continue. That also seems to be the case for 33-year-old Axel Witsel.

“It’s hard to find words in this difficult moment,” he said on Instagram. “I want to thank all the fans who supported us in Qatar and at home. Thank you Coach for everything you’ve given us over the past six years. I wish you the best. Over time, we can begin to focus on the future again. Better days are coming for Belgium.”

With those last two sentences, Witsel seems to indicate that he wants to continue to be part of that future.
