Madrid France international soccer player Antoine Griezmann has apologized on Twitter for a photo that shows him as a basketball player with black make-up. “If I’ve hurt certain people, I apologize,” the Atlético Madrid striker tweeted on Sunday night. The Frenchman had previously posted a photo in which he posed with dark make-up and an afro in an NBA All-Stars jersey.
According to French media, the footballer had dressed up and made up for a costume party. After a few hours, Griezmann deleted the picture and apologized for the “embarrassing” posts. According to information from the French newspaper “Le Monde”, he had previously tried to justify the costume: “Quiet friends, I’m a fan of the Harlem Globetrotters and this beautiful era … It’s a homage,” the 26-year-old had written accordingly . This post was also no longer available on Twitter as of Monday morning.
The so-called blackfacing – the dark make-up of white people to represent black people – is often considered racist. In Germany, too, there has been repeated criticism of this practice in recent years – for example, the depiction of colonial stereotypes of Africans at carnival. ARD presenter Guido Cantz was accused of racism last fall after appearing as a black man on his show “Understand You Fun”.
