Judo, Basile and Mungai in Bardonecchia for the Christmas camp

The usual end-of-year appointment is back on the large tatami mat set up in Piedmont in full compliance with anti-Covid regulations. Rio 2016 gold: “Here to do what we really like”

From the blues Fabio Basile and Nicholas Mungai to the Georgians Varlam Liparteliani and Avtandili Tchrikishvili, there are so many stars that shine in Bardonecchia where the Christmas Judo Camp is underway, an event organized for twenty-five years now by the Akiyama Settimo Torinese. Prestigious technical sessions and, of course, a lot of randori are the ingredients of a Judo camp which, for a safe development, has provided for the application of protocols in compliance with existing guidelines. And the answer was important, with a representative participation of ten nations besides Italy, eager to get on the large tatami set up in the sports hall of Bardonecchia to compete in three distinct groups.

Basile’s emotion

Enthusiasm, of course, reigns supreme in these days of sport and rediscovered serenity. “Returning to Bardonecchia is always a great emotion – said Fabio Basile – this Camp made me grow as an athlete and it’s always nice to come back with a different look. I have seen many Italian and foreign judokas train great despite the period is not the best … on the other hand, a camp on the bubble allows you to concentrate fully on judo: these strict rules are not fun, but they are inevitable to continue to stay on the mat to do what we like “.

The return of Nicholas

Finally returning to contact with the high level for the first time after the Olympics is the most important aspect for Nicholas Mungai, who in Tokyo 2020 stopped at the sixteenths of the 90 kg against the Uzbek Davlat Bobonov. “The Bardonecchia stage was for me the first international training camp since the Olympics – said Mungai – and even if I have already started training 100% again a few months ago, I still hadn’t had the opportunity to compare myself with foreign athletes. The level is very good, just right to launch the business next year. The three guests, Fabio, Liparteliani and Tchrikishvili are showing very interesting works and there is an excellent atmosphere in full compliance with anti-Covid regulations “.

Longing for normality

In the air of Bardonecchia you can breathe the satisfaction and serenity that one has been chasing for a long time and for which one is willing to bear limits and restrictions. “The return of the Christmas Judo Camp tries to bring back some normality in this difficult situation – was the consideration of Maria Grazia Perrucci, Federal Councilor present at the Camp – good control measures have been adopted to avoid problems related to contagion, test preliminaries and entrance tests allowed a certain safety … Then Judo took over and the coaches passed on knowledge and passion. The climate is pleasant and in any case everyone tries to be respectful of the rules “.
