Sensation: Ni Xia Lian wins a world championship medal at the age of 58

36 year break, 22nd World Championship: Ni Xia Lian outclassed her Indian opponents at the Table Tennis World Championship with her partner Sarah de Nutte and is now in the semi-finals.

Ni Xia Lian won a medal at the World Table Tennis Championships in Houston at the age of 58. The native Chinese, who plays for Luxembourg, and her partner Sarah de Nutte outclassed the Indians Manika Batra / Archana Kamath 3-0 (1,6,8) in the quarter-finals on Saturday and is in the semi-finals. Ni Xian Lian has at least a bronze medal in her 22nd World Cup even before the semi-finals against the Chinese Wang Manyu / Sun Yingsha.

For Ni Xian Lian it is the fourth World Cup medal – after a 36-year break. Back then, she had won gold in team competition and mixed doubles as a Chinese in 1983, followed by silver in doubles in 1985.
