In the final of the WTA Finals in Guadalajara there will be a duel between Garbiñe Muguruza and Anett Kontaveit.
After the Spaniard Muguruza had triumphed in the first semi-final against her compatriot Paula Badosa in two sets 6: 3 and 6: 3 without any problems, Kontaveit against the Greek Maria Sakkari, who had previously eliminated the top seed Aryna Sabalenka, showed more trouble. After the clear 6: 1 in the first set, the Estonian let her opponent get into the game better. Sakkari struggled several times with his own serve, but always managed her service – and with the break to 5: 3 made the decisive breakthrough in service to equalize the set.
In the decisive round, Sakkari took the lead with a break in the fifth game, but Kontaveit did not let that bother him, won all of the last four games and was the second finalist after a good two hours.
There, on Thursday night, there will be a reunion with Garbiñe Muguruza. In the group games, the Spaniard prevailed 6: 4 and 6: 4. In a direct comparison, the 28-year-old leads 3: 2, Kontaveit showed her excellent form at the end of the season with the tournament victories in Moscow – in the quarter-finals of this tournament she beat Muguruza 6: 1, 6: 1 – and at the Transylvania Open in Cluj-Napoca.
