Europa LeagueRacing Genk lost 3-0 in the Europa League on the field of West Ham United. Again, goals against on stationary phases were at the root of the defeat.
Racing Genk and stagnant phases: it is not a successful marriage. That was also apparent at the London Stadium. Genk initially created a few good chances against West Ham. A goal by Bongonda was disallowed for offside, a header from Onuachu went just wide. But just before the break the inevitable happened: Genk conceded a goal on a stationary phase. Dawson ruffed Onuachu on a corner and headed in the 1-0. Shortly after the break it was time again. Cresswell painted a free kick on the head of Diop, who buffed in the 2-0 via the crossbar. Genk now has 12 (!) goals against on set pieces – the shortcoming this season.
The Limburgers had to empty the chalice to the bottom. Shortly after the 2-0, Bongonda suffered too simple loss of the ball, after which West Ham switched quickly and Bowen scored the 3-0. Job done for the Londoners, game over for Genk.
Van den Brom and co thus swallowed their fourth defeat in a row (competition and EL together). In the Europa League, Genk is last in group H with three points, as many as Dinamo Zabreb and Rapid Wien. West Ham lead by 9 points.
Our man in London sees how Genk has a huge problem: “It’s in the cup. And get it out of there” (+)
